Holding the Guinness World Record for the longest running animated television series, Sazae-san originated as a manga series written and illustrated by Machiko Hasegawa. It was adapted into a tv series in 1969 and is pretty much a household name in Japan.
This Hungry Days series of animated commercials by Nissin Cup Noodles re-imagines the key characters of Sazae-san as modern day high school students. Check it out below –
The character designs are once again helmed by the brilliant illustrator Eisaku Kubonouchi ( who also designed the Kiki’s Delivery Service anime commercial for Nissin ).
The CG supervisor for the commercial is Kohta Morie, whom I worked together with on the Nissin endorsed Freedom anime some 10 years ago.
You can check Nissin’s homepage for the commercial to see more of Eisaku-san’s character design sketches, and definitely take a look at his beautiful art book Rakugaki Note too.
