Initially offered only to attendees of the Angoulême International Comics Festival as a limited edition book, where Akira creator Otomo Katsuhiro was awarded the Grand Prix d’Angoulême ( Lifetime achievement ), this tribute art book ( Otomo – A Global Tribute To The Mind Behind Akira ) is now available for all readers around the world to enjoy.
I am not knowledgeable enough to talk about the international artists featured in the book ( besides the observation that the quality of art work is consistently high ), but the Japanese greats are out in full force, with names like Katsuya Terada, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Shirow Masamune, Sho-u Tajima, Akihiko Yoshida, Takeyuki Takeya; the list goes on. Even the late Jiro Taniguchi has a contributing piece.
The art book features illustrations by some 80 artists covering 168 pages of art work, and presented in a beautiful hard cover volume that is similar in size to Otomo’s Kaba and Kaba 2 art books.
A stunning art book filled with equally amazing illustrations, and a worthy tribute to one of the greatest comic artists of our times. My highest recommendations.
Note : There is also a Japanese edition available with a slightly different page count ( 172 as compared to this book’s 168 ), but the contents should be largely similar.

Awesome! besides the great Japanese talent on board, looks like there’s a lot of fantastic European talent. Seems to be slight on North American artists though.

DISTRAKT – I know, right ?
Martin – I’m thinking it’s because the award was held in France and so only European artists were asked to take part. But it would have been so cool if American artists were involved too. Would make for a much thicker book !
Mfon – There’s so many good ones I can’t decide which is my fav !

Shirow’s piece is amazing for sure….all those references crammed into one page!
But my favorite was Eguchi’s take on the girl from Highway Star.
The other Highway Star piece is great too.
The Japanese artists really showed the European artists who rules the school, in my opinion!

Josh – Indeed, from one master to another. :] I actually like most of the work in the book, although you do see a very different take from the European artists as compared to the Japanese artists, both visually and thematically.

The japanese version of this book costs $90 at Kino Singapore compared to $45 for the english version. crazy!

Hafiz – Yeah, the Japanese edition is meant for internal circulation in Japan so the print numbers are much lower, thus the higher cost price.
