(I previously mentioned this art book in one of my Digest posts.)
Ono Hiroshi is a veteran background artist and art director who has worked on films like Kiki’s Delivery Service, Akira, Jinroh, A Letter To Momo, Wolf Children and a lot more. This book is a collection of his background art pieces from some of these films.
(above & below) Gorgeous background art plates from Kiki’s Delivery Service. Some of these are also found in Ghibli’s Art Of Kiki’s Delivery Service book.
(above & below) Background art from Hiroyuki Okiura’s A Letter To Momo. (read the official art book review here.) Ono-san also served as art director on this film, and has worked with Okiura previously on Jinroh – The Wolf Brigade.
(above left – A memorable scene in Otomo Katsuhiro’s Akira, shortly before Tetsuo goes on rampage.)
(above & below) Background art plates from Mamoru Hosoda’s Wolf Children. Ono-san also served as art director on this film. Be sure to check out the excellent art book, which contains many of Ono-san’s background art.
This is an easy recommendation – the background art pieces are gorgeous and reproduced in great fidelity, and the films featured are some of my favourites – I only wish the publishers had included some background art from Jinroh.
