Neo-Tokyo Is About To Explode - Akira Murals In Shibuya

Update : These murals are now collected in this excellent art book.

Back in summer this year I took a picture of the giant poster of Kaneda on his bike in Shibuya, Tokyo, just outside the construction barriers of Parco shopping mall.

Just last week or so the poster was taken down, but now replaced with a much more spectacular, giant montage/mural made up of Akira manga drawings. Check out some of the pictures taken by Tokyoites below :

These murals decorates the construction wall of Shibuya’s Parco shopping mall, now under renovation until 2019 – the year that Otomo Katsuhiro’s groundbreaking manga is set in. If you’re in Shibuya, be sure to check it out. It’s about 5 minutes walk from JR Shibuya station.

They should have released THESE as posters – A1 Size would work well!

I’m very open to that idea ! :]

Natalia

Woah!! That’s so cool!

This reminds me a bit of when I was ten I visited Japan for the first time, when Genma Taisen was in wide theatrical release (also Otomo-designed). Judging from the movie posters and billboards everywhere you’d think the world was about to end!

After much begging, my parents took me to see it in the theater (where it was accompanied by a trailer for a film titled then as “Revenge of the Jedi”).

Sign of the times…

Natalia – Yes, wish I could see it in person !

Todd – Wow that must have been quite an experience ! A friend gave me the Genma Taisen art book, it’s pretty rare these days – http://halcyonrealms.com/animation/genma-wars-otomo-katsuhiro-art-book-review/

What projects are you on these days ?

Yong –

Just finished spots for Monster.com and Skyrim at The Mill. Been a pretty busy year, but productive. 🙂

How’s Van treating you?

yonghow

Nice ! Vancouver’s great except for the perpetual rain. I worked on Spiderman Homecoming and a couple other shows this year. :]

Chris

Very cool. The eyeball image is amazing.
