“Illustration” is a Japanese magazine (published quarterly in 3/6/9/12) with a focus on illustration for print & manga. ( for coverage on anime production, I suggest the excellent magazine Kikan S. )
Issue number 214 features manga artist/illustrator Yoshitoshi Abe (of Serial Experiments Lain fame). I particularly like the cover art he painted for the sci-fi novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka ( image above). The story was adapted into the Hollywood film Edge Of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise. There’s also a manga edition illustrated by Death Note artist Takeshi Obata.
(above & below) Illustrations by Matsuo Hiromi. I’m planning to review the art book in the near future.
(above & below) Illustrations by Hirotaka Tanaka. In some ways his style of work reminds me of Eguchi Hisashi’s work, whom I’m a big fan too. Hirotaka doesn’t have an art book published yet, but I’m looking forward to one.
I don’t always get to browse the contents of this magazine but I got lucky because of my recent time in Tokyo. This issue covers some great illustrators and comes recommended.

great illustrations
I’d never heard of Hirotaka Tanaka before. The use of flat colours makes it look a bit like Hisashi Egushi’s work. will keep an eye out for his work.
Yoshitoshi Abe i absolutely love. Really like the 20th anniversary books that came out a couple years ago.

Mfon – Hirotaka Tanaka’s work is pretty new to me too. Hoping an art book is in the works. :]
