Detroit Not Good Circus is a series of short comics by manga artist Katsuya Terada that first appeared in the Japanese automobile magazine “Car Ex” during the early 1990s, now collected in this tankobon edition.
The narratives are primarily inspired by car racing themes like the F1 Grand Prix, although Terada does allow his imagination to fly, with some of the stories taking on a decidedly sci-fi feel, with a touch of Moebius.
Terada’s style of art work is here is quite different from his colored Monkey King comics, taking on a more whimsical and playful tone just like Gasoline Life, but the drawings are nonetheless of superb quality and cramped full of details.
(above & below) A story based on the rivalry between between race car drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda during the 1976 Formula One.
A manga packed full of Terada goodness, whether you’re a fan of automobiles or not. Even if you can’t read Japanese, the art work is still worth the price of the book. Recommended.
