Some pictures of the Criterion blu-ray release for director Alfonso Cuarón’s (Gravity) road trip/coming of age film Y Tu Mamá También. As always Criterion delivers an all rounded, fantastic package with great design and plenty of supplementary materials.
The movie itself is a newly restored 2k digital film transfer supervised by director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki, and looks amazing; images are clean and sharp, the colors dynamic but natural.
The jewel case is housed in a cardboard slipcase and the package contains 1 blu-ray, 2 dvds and a booklet featuring an essay by critic Charles Taylor and reprinted character biographies by Carlos and Alfonso Cuarón.
Y Tu Mamá También is one of those films ( like Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums ) which I initially felt little for during my first theatrical viewing but slowly warmed up to on subsequent viewings. A taste that needs a longer time to acquire, perhaps.
This blu-ray by Criterion delivers stately on all fronts and gets my highest recommendations.

Loved the movie, and Gael Garcia Bernal. It made me want to visit Mexico (and maybe find that mythical beach).

may-lynn – I’ll like to think that I can appreciate/understand this film a little better than when I first saw it more than a decade ago. 😛
btw that beach is called “Heaven’s Mouth” in the film. I might be able to find where they actually shot it in the making of videos. 😛

Yes – I think time does give it a different, better perspective. And do share the address of Heaven’s Mouth if you find it 🙂

I’ve been collecting (and selling again) Criterion dads for years now. Wasn’t quite sure if I should pick this one up but probably will due to these amazing pictures of the beautiful packaging.
Great blog btw. bookmarked and straight to my feed reader.
