True Detective’s Hynoptic Opening Sequence

Posted By yonghow on February 26th, 2014

This post is for the benefit of those who have might have missed out on HBO’s exceptional True Detective series, in particular the mesmerizing opening sequence utilizing the photography visual concept of multiple exposures, done to spectacular effect. Check it out below –

The spellbinding opening sequence is only the icing on the cake – the series is a class act in itself and is exemplary in all the different disciplines of film-making. I also relish the idea of the anthology format that the series is employing, with each season featuring a different cast of characters and story.

True Detective is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, whose recent film adaptation of Jane Eyre I really liked. I hope the upcoming blu-ray release comes with juicy morsels on the cinematography of the series.

I was waiting for you to see this show! I remember you really liked Jane Eyre and wanted to see what you thought of this series. So far it has been knocking it out of the park episode after episode, and I don’t know if I have seen such a consistently (consistent being a key word!)fantastic show on American television before. There have now been a few instances of other companies now trying to take a similar approach with their shows, having a single writer/director combination; I know Cinemax or Showtime has just announced a new project with Steven Soderbergh at the helm as well, and I’m interested to see not only the following seasons of True detective, but if networks will learn the right lessons from it and the possibility of a new renaissance of American television.

Yep, definitely agree with you regarding the consistency of the episodes. It seems Cary Fukunaga won’t be taking on the role of director in season 2 so I’m keen to see who else they’ll find to equal such a high bar already set. I’ve not heard of the project by Steven Soderbergh, the last time I heard he has decided to stop making films ? Perhaps just for the big screen maybe ? In any case, I’ll keep an eye out for it. :]

Yeah, he had said he was stepping away from making films (did you see Behind The Candelabra? It was amazing!), but I think he left open the possibility of toying around with some other projects; I know he was planning on re-editing some of his earlier works as well.

Thanks for the reccomendation. I started watching this show right after reading this topic. The last episode of the first season ended this week and now i can’t wait for the next season of this and Game of Thrones.

Can’t wait for Game Of Thrones S4 as well. 😛

Should be credited to Dan Mountfords, the guy who created this double exposure. I hope he helped create the images, if not I feel sorry that True Detective just ripped off his clever style.
