Project 2501 : Homage To Ghost In The Shell

Warning : The following post contains nudity/adult content.

“Project 2501” is a still photography project in homage to Mamoru Oshii’s groundbreaking anime Ghost In The Shell, itself adapted from Masamune Shirow’s manga of the same name. (“Project 2501” is the codename given to the ghosthacker Puppetmaster in Oshii’s film.)

The endeavor is spearheaded by director/CG artist Ash Thorp, together with a team of about 20 artists from all over the globe. Austrian animator Bahi JD, whom I interviewed back in 2013 also participated in the project.

Beautiful photography/filmmaking, this also serves as an excellent proof of concept and demonstrates that a team of highly skilled artists with a deep reverence and understanding of the source material can create stunning visuals that is true to the heart of the original work.

They took away all the films colour and replaced it with grey blues. Not cool.

ono – I think perhaps the cool color palette is a deliberate aesthetic choice and the look the artists were aiming for. The original colors seen in the anime might not necessarily work well when translated into a “live-action” work, and/or it might end up looking garish. Of course, all this is subjective. :p

Yeah, I dislike this lack of original colors too. It reminds me that computers and software can really steal personality and identity from good ideas like this photo\image project homage.

The present tendency of movies is to be lazy and use an artificial set of pallete suggested by the computer to portray the future as blue and gray. In Hollywood they would spoil it even more by adding other fad elements such as dubstep (new Appleseed trailer, I am looking at you).

Also I think the woman should be an italian or someone similar to Trinity for the role. In my dream I would choose a girl with short black hair (straight) with blue eyes and long proportions (a beatiful neck plus long arms and legs like Lee Loo from Fifth Element). The woman they used above seems to have a face that is too sweet\gentle unlike the “hard eye”, “deep thought” lady from Gits 1 and the flexible woman from Stand Alone Complex.

Aside that, as a fan of the original work, I aplaud the good points in the project as being a very creative initiative and would give 8 out of 10 stars.
