GUWEIZ - The Art Of Gu Zheng Wei Book Review

GUWEIZ is a collection of illustrations by Singaporean artist Gu Zheng Wei, aka Guweiz. With visual themes strongly influenced by Japanese culture and anime, the artist has a huge following online and has also being headlined in the Asian Illustrators art book I reviewed recently.

In this book readers will discover his artistic journey from the very beginning, with behind-the-scenes details about how some of his most popular pieces were created. He reveals his secrets for turning influences into truly original digital art, including that all-important narrative that takes drawing and painting beyond the purely visual. Step-by-step tutorials share techniques and tips to help you create these sorts of effects in your art, resulting in images with the depth of detail and intrigue that Guweiz has made his trademark.

Equipped with amazing illustration skills and a keen eye for bold, impressionable mise en scene, there’s little wonder why Guweiz has garnered such a big following. I also enjoy his art work, though I’m personally not a fan of the format of this art book.

The numerous text boxes popping all over the pages are just too distracting and get in the way of the artist’s otherwise impressive art work, making appreciation difficult. IMHO it would have been better just to focus on the best presentation of his art work and leave the insights and how-tos for just a few select pieces of work at the end of the book. This is still a great collection of his art work and certainly worth your money, but it could have been presented better.

I completely agree about the format. I love this artist’s work but the book turned me off completely. Shame as I was really hyped about getting it but the whole book looks like a digital painting magazine tutorial issue…

Sisteroid – Yes you’re right, it does look like a tutorial found in those digital painting magazines. A real pity, really.
