Ghost In The Shell SAC_2045 is the latest animation adaptation of Shirow Masamune’s groundbreaking manga Ghost In The Shell, made world famous by the first animated feature film directed by Mamoru Oshii. SAC_2045 is produced by Netflix Japan with character designs created by Japan based Russian illustrator Ilya Kuvshinov; see two of his art books I have previously reviewed – Eternal and Momentary.
I don’t usually review art books of anime or films until I’ve seen them, because some context of the subject allow me to pen a better article, but I like and know Ilya’s work well enough to make an exception in this case.
This visual guide features character designs of the members from the famous Public Security Section 9 in the Ghost In The Shell universe, in particular the Standalone Complex ( SAC ) sub-continuity. Motoko Kusanagi, Batou, Togusa, Ishikawa and the rest of the members are all included. Also showcased are some mecha designs of the Tachikoma units, drones and armored suites.
Ilya Kuvshinov’s take on the designs of these familiar Ghost In The Shell characters lend a fresh new look to the franchise, and whether you like them or not is a matter of taste, I guess. I’m looking forward to watching the animation series ( I have a long backlog of titles to catch up on ), but this fairly low priced book is worth picking up purely on account of Ilya’s beautiful designs and illustrations.
