…garbage collectors.
This was too whimsical a sight to pass up – an Ultraman figure stuck to the back door of a garbage truck near Nishi Ogikubo, Tokyo. Don’t even ask me why there’s a soccer ball between his legs. I had to exercise considerable discretion when snapping these pictures because there were three burly guys in the front seats taking an afternoon siesta; won’t want them to wake up and find me poking fun at their beloved deity.
These guys must find it really amusing to see Ultraman shuffle up and down the truck’s collapsable back door as they go about their garbage collection chores everyday.
Of course, Ultraman is so popular a figure in Japan his presence is ubiquitous, especially on tv -check out some of the television commercials he has graced below :
I have rather fond memories of Ultraman, watching the series on television as a young kid. Nevermind that Ultraman was speaking Malay (only Malaysia’s RTM channel was showing it, Singapore had no such luck in those early days.) and I hadn’t the foggiest – all I needed to know was that 20 minutes or so into the show, its duke out time.
Anyone else a fan of Ultraman here ? I know Singapore has its own Ultraman community, and one of its founders is well, One from The FOOL’S Progress.

ultraman was always much too…whats the word… “epic?” for me as a child… i liked it, but in small doses!
btw, i’ve seen the same style of anime-worship on garbage trucks in mexico: yep at least 4 or 5 times there was a goku hanging outside of those huge garbage trucks! dangling everywhere like he was the patron saint of…. well, mexico!
Yup, I remember malay speaking Ultraman, along with malay speaking Mask Rider and Doraemon
hey, i thought Goku WAS the patron saint of Mexico. either way, Ultraman was pretty cool. Ultra Seven was my favorite, though i cannot really remember why. maybe it was because the dude has like a super cutting boomerang axe on his head.
oh, goku is much more than just the patron saint of mexico: if it werent for jesus and mary, i bet he’d be worshiped and given sacrifices, aztec style!!!
