In this November 2020 post I showcased the cover art of Garōden ( 餓狼伝 – Legend Of The Hungry Wolf), a series of Japanese martial arts novels by Japanese sci-fi writer Baku Yumemakura, illustrated by the renowned manga artist Katsuya Terada.

Garoden isn’t their only collaboration; Terada-san has also illustrated the covers for another of Yumemakura’s novel series, Chimera ( キマイラ ), which follows the story of Ko Otori, a normal high school student who experiences a repeating dream of being eaten by a beast from inside himself. When Ko meets Reiichi Kuki, the elite student who rules his school, the encounter awakens hidden powers inside him; a terrifying and legendary creature known as a Chimera.

Check out these stunning covers for the novel illustrated by Terada; as always the artist’s signature cross-hatching style really adds rich and intricate textural quality to his drawings –

Just like the art covers he has done for Garoden, here’s hoping these illustrations for Chimera also find their way eventually into his next art book, and hopefully without too long a wait !

It just occurred to me that a good portion of Terada’s work could be characterized as body horror. The monkey king stuff, his Devilman one-shot, that Yakuza story he did (forgot the name, but featured quite a bit of twisted/harsh sexual and violent content), the murals he does, all have a motif of bodies being grotesquely transformed, twisted, melded, battered, and/or otherwise violated.

I wonder if this theme is purposeful or if I’m making a stretch.

Chris – I don’t really know about the creative motivations for his themes of violence, but I do remember reading somewhere that he started drawing erotic illustrations when he was young because he just couldn’t find any out there that he found to be good haha.
