Shin Ultraman Trailer 映画『シン・ウルトラマン』予告

Toho has just released the full trailer for the much anticipated tokusatsu film Shin Ultraman (シン・ウルトラマン), directed by Shin Godzilla co-director Shinji Higuchi and produced by Hideaki Anno of Evangelion fame. The trailer gives us a closer look at the Ultraman design as well as a few glimpses of the kaijus he’ll be up against. Check it out below –

A re-imagining of the popular tokusatsu hero Ultraman that made his first appearance in the late 1960s, the film is a co-production between Toho Pictures and Cine Bazar, with the film presented by Tsuburaya Productions, Toho, and Khara.

The look and design of Ultraman and the Kaijus seen in the teaser definitely pays homage to the original character designs created by concept designer Narita Toru, with those bold primary colors. I highly recommend checking out Narita Toru’s art book (image below) which showcases many of his classic Kaiju designs.

While we’re talking about Ultraman, here’s a video released by my hometown’s Singapore Tourism Promotion Board and Tsuburaya ( the company which owns the Ultraman copyright ). The Merlion, Singapore’s most famous tourist mascot is re-imagined as a friendly Kaiju ally, helping Ultraman fend off other monsters in the scenic Marina Bay Sands / Gardens By The Bay area. The video is clearly meant to draw Japanese visitors back to Singapore now that borders are largely open again, but it also marks 55 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan – a milestone that also coincided with Ultraman’s 55th birthday.

Shin-Ultraman will be released in Japan on the 13th of May 2022. It’s probably going to take awhile of us located overseas to see it, but I’m definitely looking forward to it, as well as the eventual art book that will be released; I have a feeling it’s going to be big like the one for Shin Godzilla.
