Kim Ki Duk’s “Dream”

I haven’t been watching too many Korean films lately ( I think the last one was Bong Joon-ho’s highly entertaining “The Host” ), but for a decent period of time ( shortly before I came to Tokyo ) I was totally and intensely enamored with Korean cinema – for the simply reason because it was good, really really good. Take Care of my Cat; Memories of Murder; A Tale of Two Sisters, One Fine Spring Day, Oldboy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, A Bittersweet Life, I can go on and on.

Kim ki Duk’s latest outing “Bimong”, ( Sad Dream ) starring Japanese actor Odagiri Joe ( Mushishi, Shinobi ) and Lee Na-Young ( Who Are You ?, a Korean You’ve Got Mail of sorts and boasting an excellent soundtrack ) captured my attention partly because of the beautiful poster and also because I rather enjoyed the director’s earlier film “Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter…and Spring” ( though its not a film you want to catch when you’re sleepy. )

Bimong has been garnering excellent reviews since its release so I’m looking forward to seeing it, but it won’t be in Japan till Febuary next year; perhaps the dvd is a better option.

Have you folks seen any Korean film recently that’s good enough to recommend ? I need to do some catching up.

Great, thanks for the heads up. I loved “Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring again” so I’ll definitely be tracking this one down. I hope the visuals live up to the nice poster design.

Second “The Chaser” recommendation. It is that good.
Also “The Crossing”, released in 2008 too.
