Bandai Namco Arts will be releasing a new 4k remastered Ultra HD version of Otomo Katsuhiro’s groundbreaking anime Akira on the 24th of April 2020.
The new print is a 4k scan of the original 35mm master positive film. Also, the composer for the film Yamashiro Shoji supervised a new mix of the 5.1ch audio track with a “192kHz Hypersonic-Effect”. Source.

The Amazon special limited edition comes with a B2 sized poster, and includes 3 discs – one 4k UHD and two blu-rays ( one for the film and one for supplements/making of ).
The extras include documentaries like AKIRA SOUND MAKING 2019, as well as several features that came with the 1988 LD release.
There are Japanese and English subtitles for the film.
Pricey as it is, I’ll likely be picking up a copy unless there’s news of a English version soon.

Of course I pre-ordered this already despite not having a 4K player or TV….what can I say? I’m a fanatic!
Note that the slightly more expensive amazon exclusive comes with a B2 size poster, a reproduction of one of the original Japanese posters. Very cool….see it here:

However…..I noticed that bandai is also selling it directly, and their incentive is also a B2 sized reproduction poster, but it’s an earlier design I believe.

Personally…..I gotta go with amazon. They’re both cool and all, but the Amazon poster just has the edge, doesn’t it? It’s a classic!!
There were plans to release this gloriously remastered, beautifully detailed and sharp 4K digital release for a limited run in IMAX theaters all across Japan, starting on April 3rd, a week from tonight.
I was gonna be first in line, obviously.
BUT……it’s all up in the air now thanks to the damn virus.
Hopefully in a week someone will give the OK to get at least a few screenings….I really really don’t wanna miss this!

Josh – I knew you’ll be excited about this. I do have a 4k tv but no uhd player yet; I won’t be able to enjoy this till I get my PS5 nearer to the end of the year.
Yeah I definitely prefer the Amazon poster than the other one too. It’ll be amazing to see in on IMAX theater, let me know if you ever do. :]
