Shinkansen And Depots – Morinaga Yo Illustration Book Review

Shinkansen And Depots is a lively educational picture book by Japanese illustrator Morinaga Yo. Through his charming illustrations, the artist showcases the construction and inner workings of Japan’s hi tech bullet train, the N700 series Shinkansen, as well as the railway depots that service the fleet.

I’ve taken the Shinkansen a couple of times when I lived in Tokyo and have always been amazed by the incredible speed and comfort of the train. This charming art book by Morinaga Yo is a great way to learn more about the Shinkansen while enjoying the artist’s beautiful watercolor illustrations.

Also, the language used is pretty simple and all Kanji characters come with furigana pronunciations, which is great for learning Japanese !

I love these types of art/reference books that provide detailed information (with cross-sections and the like) in a comic book/manga style of art. I think I must have had similar ones from when I was kid (probably something done by Disney), but when I see something like this it has a great nostalgic pull for me.

CE – Agreed ! It’s a great way to teach kids about how things work, and the illustrations are charming for adults too ! :]
