Reminiscence (おもひでぎょうじ) is an illustrated book by Yoshiyuki Momose (百瀬義行), a veteran Ghibli animator whose portfolio spans many of the Studio’s most successful films, including Whisper Of The Heart, Spirited Away, Porco Rosso and Mononoke Hime, just to name a few.
Through his beautiful watercolor drawings, the artist takes us back on a nostalgic journey to the Showa era of Japan during the 1960s, documenting the many wonderful sights and events that take place over the course of the year; traditional festivals like flying the Koinobori ( carp windsocks ) during Children’s Day, hanabi ( fireworks ) in Summer; the Tanabata festival and many more. There are also a few select pages showcasing the raw ingredients that are commonly used to prepare signature Japanese dishes during the 4 different seasons.
So many artist and animators from Ghibli are just aces with watercolors ( like Kazuo Oga, Yoshida Noboru, and Miyazaki-san himself ), and Yoshiyuki Momose is certainly one of them. Even if you cannot understand the Japanese text, the wonderful illustrations are still well worth the price of the book. Highly recommended.

Beautiful. Will definetily be one of my next purchases. Right now I am waiting for Takehiko Inoues Slam Dunk Illustrations 2 and Little Thunders Scent of Hong Kong.
This is my first post on this page, although I am following now for some years I never took the time to thank you for all the work you are doing. This is my go to site when I am looking out for new art books. It´s clean and has all the information thats relevant to me.

A really nice book. I’m not sure my Japanese is up to reading the text (I’ll say “yet,” as I’m an optimist), but the watercolor art is really heartwarming. I also like the youtube flip-through for this book — it gave me a good real-life sense of how the book will look in my hands. This will go on my list to purchase.
