Good Weather - Katsuhiro Otomo Manga Review 大友克洋

Warning : The following post contains nudity/adult content.

Good Weather is an omnibus collection of short comics by famed manga artist Katsuhiro Otomo, creator of Akira. Published in 1981, this book includes 10 short stories and actually precedes his other omnibus volume Boogie Woogie Waltz.

This collection of short stories doesn’t include any sci-fi outings, a genre which Otomo is more than familiar with, but does have a period piece, and also the story SO WHAT which was adapted into a live-action film in 1988.

Unlike manga artists like Inoue Takehiko whose drawing skills gradually improved over the course of their career, Otomo’s technical prowess was already mighty even back in 1980, even though his visual style evolved subtly as he entered his Akira years.

Just like Boogie Woogie Waltz, Good Weather is a rare opportunity to enjoy and study the work of Otomo during the earliest days of his manga career, before Akira came along and Neo-Tokyo exploded.

Availability : Very rare. Some used copies are available from Amazon ( Japan, US, UK all carry it – see purchase links below ), and if you’re lucky a copy might be on sale at the Mandarake bookstore in Nakano Broadway, Tokyo ( where I also picked up my copy ).

..Even tho I still have criticism toward male privilege & dominance in gen. & have hard time coming up with “authentic” Korean style; Otomo himself alone is unique while perfectly oriented in his own world as a manga artist. No one’s gonna deny that.

Picked up a copy during my trip to Tokyo last August (Mandarake Akihabara).
It’s really a pity that this book, and Otomo’s other early works, will probably never be translated: according to rumors, Otomo isn’t interested in that. Or maybe there is copyright issues ?
