Kim Jung-Gi 2011 Sketch Collection Art Book Review

Posted By yonghow on November 26th, 2012

Warning : The following post contains nudity/adult content.

For quite a while I’ve been hearing my illustrator friends sing praises of Kim Jung-Gi’s astonishing sketches, and anticipated him to be good, but I honestly didn’t expect him to be THIS good. As far as draughtsmanship skills are concerned, he is as good as I have ever seen, right up there with renowned manga artists like Otomo Katsuhiro, Katsuya Terada, Tatsuyuki Tanaka.

Really, this dude can draw pretty much everything. Caricatures, realistic, stylized, you name it. The numerous colored works will also give you a good idea of how well he can paint. His understanding of the human anatomy is beyond expert; the same goes for his ability to render spatial form and perspective.

(above left ) Tribute sketches of some familiar characters from another kickass artist.

Stylewise, I definitely see resemblances to Otomo’s and Tatsuyuki Tanaka’s work, Moebius too, of course – his influence is ubiquitous.

The hard cover book is huge at 686 pages, and comes with a cardboard case. ( see above )

A note of warning : There’s quite a fair bit of nudity in the book, including realistic and very graphic depictions of intercourse, as well as bondage, so keep this book clear of children if you intend to get a copy.

This is great. I absolutely love sketchy looking artwork, more than anything else really. But 686 pages?!?! HOOOLLLLYYY

Alexandre

Is there really no other way to buy it? I can’t even tell the price of it..

David

I believe 60000 won = $55?

His drawings are awesome. I really like his military/police action images.
I wonder if there is a huge following in his comic books if there is any. It seems like he’s doing drawings for foreign writers, yet he doesn’t seem to mention his other published works other than his sketch illustration collections .

I’ve seen the copy at Kinokuniya in SF, So I might get it when they put Christmas sale on all books.

this is one of my favorite book purchases in the past year. i bought both this and his 2007 sketchbook from his assistant and i never get bored looking through it. his freehand draughtsmenship is insane.

here is an incredible video of his doing a drawing in public for some event in china:

Alexandre – You can also try Singapore’s Kinokuniya online bookstore, which ships internationally – http://www.kinokuniya.com/sg/index.php/fho001

Zack – Thanks for the video link Zack. His work is spectacular, I’ll be getting his 2007 sketchbook as well.

Aw man, buying it from his website would be around 100 USD and yet buying it from Kinokuniya comes up to 246 USD. It’s still worth it, I guess. Thanks for the link, yonghow.

Anyhow, I sure do love this type of artbook. Lots of artists don’t show enough sketches in their books and are worried about only displaying finalized pieces. I’m buying both sketchbooks, that’s for sure.

Can anyone help me on how to order and buy the these 2 books? I went to the website but cannot read it. And it doesn’t seem to have any other links to even place your order.

Is there an english version? Please, someone help, I really want to buy these 2 books.

For those like myself who were befuddled with superani and the singapore site, I stumbled upon it here at Stuart Ng Books (stuartngbooks.com).
They’re located in California, but it looks like they ship internationally.

The 2011 Sketchbook is currently OUT OF STOCK. (No thanks to me!)
I don’t know if they’re expecting more, but you could certainly ask.
They DO have the 2007 book, though.

I just read on parka blogs that Kim Jung Gi sketchbooks are available at http://www.kimjunggius.com. They only ship to U.S. though…
