Primal - Genndy Tartakovsky Prehistoric Animated Series

Primal is a new animated TV series premiering on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, known his Hotel Transylvania films and Samurai Jack. The story is based in the prehistoric age and tells the tale of the friendship between a caveman and a dinosaur. Check out the trailer below –

I was lucky enough to catch the pilot episode of the series when Genndy dropped by Sony Imageworks ( where he made his Hotel Transylvania series of films ) for a special screening and Q&A, and was absolutely riveted for the entirety of the presentation.

During the Q&A session some of the questions Genndy answered ( and which I remember ) include –

– when asked about how he based the movement and fighting style of the cavemen, he mentioned he studied the movement of gorillas; the cavemen has no fancy martial arts moves like spinning his spear, etc, but just purely smashes. He also mentioned that the cavemen tend to revert to movement on all four limbs ( just like a gorilla ) when he needed to move swiftly and agilely.

– when asked about why he made the series without any dialogue, Genndy mentioned that with dialogue viewers tend to pay less attention to the visuals because they can “drift off” and just let the words fill in the narrative, but with this series the viewers will have to pay close attention to what is happening on screen the entire time or chance missing important moments in the story.

Primal begins October 7 at midnight on Adult Swim, I’m definitely watching all of it !
