Ghost in the Shell : SAC_2045 Official Trailer

Netflix Japan has just released the first trailer for the upcoming Ghost In The Shell CG anime series titled SAC_2045 ( 攻殻機動隊 SAC_2045 ). Check it out below –

Production of the series is once again handled by Production I.G, the renowned animation studio that has made all the previous Ghost In The Shell TV series like Standalone Complex. The character designs are done by the popular illustrator Ilya Kuvshinov, author of art books Momentary and Eternal.

I really enjoyed the Standalone Complex series and personally prefer the 2D hand drawn look, but I’ll reserve judgement on how good or bad this new series is until I’ve actually seen at least one episode.

SAC_2045 will begin screening worldwide on Netflix from April 2020. In the meantime, If you haven’t yet seen the Standalone Complex series, I highly, highly recommend it.

I just have to wonder what drives creative decisions sometimes. What is the benefit of this rather lackluster 3D, over 2D? Because I’m seeing none, aesthetically. Must be hella cheap to produce I guess…

Chris

I strongly prefer the 2D hand-drawn look to this lackluster (a good description by the other commenter) effort. I will probably not watch any of it, tbh, just because the jump to 3D is just too far for such a classic 2D franchise.

My guessing goes for the big pressure even renowed studios are getting by “new” media like Netflix with its very aggressive aproach to content. That’s the state of animation business everywhere.
Selling a good product that include a character re-design by a hype newcomer and 3D for the sake of 3D gets really fishy in my opinion.
I can remmeber clearly the Ghost in the Shell 2.0 vers as a meaningless effort to update a classic making even look better the original version.
I would prefer 3D but offering something new, something special, something that encourage me to watch it, but judging by the trailer, that’s not the case.
And I’m not even talking about the plot, that seems to be stagnant… and unfortunately Netflix is known for cheesy, not challenging plots.
I would prefer 3D with a “twist”, Netflix is only offering the “shout”…

Chris James – I’m not entirely convinced that Netflix went the CG way because it was cheaper ( I don’t think it can be that much cheaper than 2D ). My guess is that they wanted to go a different direction, unfortunately it seems too jarring a change for the tastes of original fans.

Chris – I’m going to check it out at least. Won’t have high expectations, but gotta give it a chance at least ! 😛

nyuudo – Yep, I certainly remember Ghost In The Shell 2.0 too. Back then they were just chasing the CG bandwagon, but now it’s much harder to justify. Hopefully some making of or online chatter from the filmmakers later on will shed some light on why they actually decided to venture in this direction.
